A customer recently reported that their Panasonic automatic door sensor would sometimes stop responding and they could not figure out why. Given that Panasonic operators have an exceptionally high in-service quality rate, a sensor failure was almost out of the question. To find the truth, I went to the installation site myself.
One of the doors did not detect anything when powered on. I tested both the inner and outer sensors and neither indicator light came on, which meant there was no power. I checked the inner and outer sensor plugs and the switch wiring—everything was fine. I also traced the cable run and found no fraying or breaks. Could it be the switch module? That seemed unlikely too—then I remembered that on a sample door in our showroom, a motor wire terminal had come loose from repeated plugging and unplugging. I tried pushing the switch-module plug in a little further and re-energizing it, and the problem was solved.
As it turned out, the root cause the customer was complaining about was improper handling during installation—the installer had pulled on the wire leads to plug and unplug the connector, which caused the internal conductors to loosen and lose contact. If your Panasonic automatic door also has inner and outer sensors that do not respond, be sure to check the switch-module plug. This small fault is well hidden; although simple, it is very easy to overlook.
